For almost 60 years, the Volunteer + Information Centre of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties (VIQ) has been quietly shaping the strength of our region. Since 1966, VIQ has worked to connect people who want to give back with the programs and agencies that need support. Today, the organization helps more than 284 local agencies find and retain volunteers, many of which could not operate without them.
"Volunteerism is what brings people together and makes a community stronger," the team shared. "When people help one another, you can feel the difference."
VIQ's work stretches into nearly every corner of community life. In high schools, they encourage young people to discover the impact of giving back through presentations and student volunteer fairs. They support post-secondary and seniors' programs, community associations, and at-risk youth through their partnership with St. Leonard's.
At the same time, VIQ is woven into many of the community moments that bring us all together. The team plays a key role in large-scale local events that boost tourism and pride, including the U15 National Soccer Championships, Empire Rockfest, and the Homestead Market's Antique Sale and Haunted Maze.
Behind it all is a small team with a huge heart. Executive Director Brenda has spent 20 years with VIQ. Project and Event Manager Mykayla joined two years ago. Their bond is evident, and they describe their workplace as a family that pitches in wherever needed.
